Claire…ification – Don’t Underestimate the Power of Encouragement

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
[I Thessalonians 5:11]

Last week our daughter made some very significant, life-changing decisions.  She decided to leave Boone, the town where she loved living while she was in college.  She graduated from Appalachian State University in December and since then she has struggled with her next steps.  She found herself in a job that wasn’t what she had hoped for and in an unhealthy relationship with a young man she had dated for over a year.  She realized that in the busy-ness of finishing school and working part-time jobs and spending time in the relationship she was in, she had become isolated from many of her friends and had begun to feel somewhat alone.  She put out a cry for help and her friends and family showed up, literally and figuratively in amazing ways.

Numerous people offered her (and her dog) a place to stay if needed.  The network is active as she seeks a job more aligned with her goals, but most importantly, family and friends from near and far have expressed their concern and love for her and for all who care for and about her.  The body of Christ has shown up and off in a number of ways.  She has received words of encouragement beyond imagination, has received radical hospitality and is in a much better place because of it.

I’ve been reminded of the importance of staying in touch with people we care about on a regular basis.  A quick check-in call or note or word of encouragement on social media can make a significant difference when someone is feeling down.  I’ve also learned something about the power of being vulnerable.  So many people have shared their stories of struggles they have encountered when the door was opened for them to do so.

I am grateful for all who have expressed their love and encouragement.  And I am excited to see what God has in store for our smart and strong and amazingly gifted daughter.

Peace Y’all,

Claire
