We all like to marvel at the beauty of God’s creation. For many of us, when we sit by the ocean or atop a mountain, or in any other setting where we are surrounded by nature, we are reminded of the awesomeness of all that God brought into existence.
In scripture we learn that God has given us dominion over every living thing that God has created. [Genesis 1:26-28, Psalm 8:6-8, etc.] In doing so, God has demonstrated an incredible amount of trust in us, and with that trust comes a significant amount of responsibility.
The word “dominion” in our generation is often thought of with some sort of aggressive or destructive behavior associated with it, but a more biblical view is that we are to be responsible for God’s creation. We have fallen short in this responsibility by mistreating creation. Each of us has a role to play in serving God by serving others and in our care for all of God’s creation.

Christians as individuals and churches should take a leadership role in caring for our environment by offering education on the importance of creation care and in modeling it. Let us be mindful that as recipients of God’s grace and gifts, we are to show our gratitude by being good stewards.
