It is possible to find joy, spiritual renewal, and peace in the midst of and wake of a difficult time. Each of us as individuals and every church community has ebbs and flows, times when things are going really well and times when things are uncertain, scary or difficult.
It is easy for us to count our blessings when everyone in our family and/or church family is healthy and happy. It may be more challenging for us when things are not going so smoothly or when there are unknowns about our future or the future of the church.
Every day is a mystery and when we are faced with the uncertainty of what tomorrow and the next day will bring, we are called to trust that God is present with us and is working for good in this world. We must trust that God is holding us and leading us and if we remain open, we might find ourselves agents of God’s grace and mercy or utilized by God to usher in a new phase of life for ourselves, our loved ones and our church and community.
The reality is that none of us are secure in this world except in Christ. Nothing is certain. We aren’t guaranteed our next meal or our next heartbeat. We should become cautious if we find ourselves feeling too secure because those are the times that we may become less reliant on God.
In times of uncertainty, let us reflect on these promises found in scripture:
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Psalm 32:8
He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. Isaiah 43:2
