In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shown in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” [2 Corinthians 4:3-6]
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them and a voice came out of the cloud. “This is my beloved Son, listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.” [Mark 9:2-9]
The recent Lectionary Text from Transformation Sunday is filled with imagery where God’s people seek and see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ and become transformed. Sometimes Jesus leads his disciples to the feet of great prophets as a reminder of those who have been sent to point us towards the glory of God.
As disciples of Christ, we too are called to seek the light of the gospel and sometimes Jesus leads us away from our busyness, creating space for us to hear God’s voice as we seek the light, opening ourselves to hear from the prophets and the saints, setting aside time to worship and to pray and to be in fellowship with kindred spirits.
In the coming weeks, I would like to invite you to seek the light of the Gospel, so that we can be reminded of God’s beloved Son that we are called to listen to.
